The Imagine Cup was founded in 2003. Worldwide Finals host countries have spanned the globe from Spain, to Brazil, to Japan, to India, to South Korea, to France and last year, in Egypt. The 2010 Worldwide Finals will take place in Poland.

The "cup" itself, a trophy first awarded in 2003 when Software Design was the only category, has spent time with the Software Design champions in the United States (2003-2004), France (2004-2005), Russia (2005-2006), Italy (2006-2007), Thailand (2007-2008), Australia (2008-2009) and Romania (2009-2010).
